If this sounds familiar

He takes a minute to get going in the morning now, and it's worse when the house is cold.

She's taken to sleeping on the radiator shelf and you'd rather she had somewhere safer.

The house drops to nothing overnight and the old cat is curled into the tightest ball you've ever seen.

Why you'll love it

The danger with a heating pad isn't that it gets too hot. It's that it stays warm on a pet who can't move away.

Body temperature, not hot

35 to 45°C, which is around where a dog or cat sits naturally. Human pads run far hotter and are a genuine burn risk on an animal who can't tell you.

Steel-sleeved cord

A 50cm chew-resistant tube covers the section nearest the pad - the part a bored dog finds first - and the adapter is UL-listed rather than unbranded.

Warm in five minutes

Two settings, 32W on high and 16W on low. Quick enough that you can switch it on when they settle rather than leaving it running all day.

Easier on stiff joints

Warmth helps an arthritic dog or an old cat get moving. It's one of the simplest things you can do for a pet who's slowed down.

Always leave somewhere unheated for them to move to.

Never make the whole bed warm. A pet regulates temperature by moving — onto the heat when they want it, off when they've had enough — and the one rule with any heated surface is that moving off has to be possible. Put the pad at one end of the bed, under a blanket, and leave the other end cool. That single habit prevents almost every problem a heating pad can cause.

How it works

Why a pet pad runs cooler than a human one

A dog's normal body temperature is around 38 to 39°C, and a cat's is much the same. This pad runs between 35 and 45°C, which means on the low setting it sits just under body heat and on the high setting a little above it. That's the correct range for an animal to lie on, and it's a long way below where a human heating pad operates — those are designed for brief use through clothing on skin that can tell you when it's too hot.

Your pet can't tell you. Worse, the pets most likely to want a heated bed are the ones least able to get off it: elderly dogs with stiff hips, cats recovering from an anaesthetic, anything with limited mobility. Prolonged contact with a surface above about 44°C can damage tissue even though it never feels dangerously hot — which is why the top of this pad's range is where it is, and why the escape route matters more than the thermostat.

The cord is the other half of the design. A 50cm steel sleeve covers the section nearest the pad, which is the part a bored dog finds first, and the adapter is UL-listed rather than unbranded. Both are the things that separate a heating pad you can leave plugged in from one you can't.

M is 45 x 45cm, which suits a cat or a small dog curled up. L is 70 x 45cm, enough for a spaniel or a medium dog to stretch out on. Both are 1.5cm thick, so they sit inside an existing bed rather than replacing it. The cord runs 125cm with a 50cm steel-sleeved section at the pet end.

Simple to use

Lay it flat, hide the cord, leave an escape.

Step 01 · Prepare

Lay it flat and cover it

Flat, never folded or creased - folding damages the heating wire inside. Put a blanket or a towel over the top rather than letting them lie on the bare surface. It's 1.5cm thick, so it sits inside the bed they already use.

Step 02 · Secure

Run the cord out of reach

The 50cm steel sleeve protects the end nearest the pad. Route the rest of the 125cm behind furniture or under the bed so there's no loose cable for a bored dog to investigate.

Step 03 · Routine

Always leave somewhere unheated

Pad at one end of the bed, nothing at the other. A pet regulates by moving on and off the heat, and that only works if there's somewhere cooler to move to. Start on low and watch the first couple of sessions.

Great for

  • Elderly dogs and cats with stiff joints
  • Thin-coated and hairless breeds - greyhounds, whippets, sphynx
  • Cold houses and rooms that drop overnight
  • Kittens and puppies in their first winter
  • Pets recovering from illness or surgery, with your vet's agreement
  • Cats who have started sleeping somewhere unsafe to find warmth

Not ideal for

  • Outdoor use. This is rated indoor only - not for sheds, garages, catios or kennels.
  • Unsupervised use with a determined chewer. The steel sleeve covers 50cm, not the whole cord.
  • Pets who physically can't move off it, unless you're there to watch. Prolonged contact is where burns come from.
  • Covering the whole bed. There must always be an unheated area.
  • Anywhere outside North America. It's AC 110V.

Heat, pets, and how burns actually happen

Why human heating pads are dangerous for pets

Yours is built for short use, through clothing, on skin that reports back. It runs far hotter than any animal should lie on. A pet pad is designed to sit at or just above body temperature and hold there - which feels underwhelming to a human hand and is exactly right for a dog.

How burns actually happen

Not from something searingly hot, usually. Prolonged contact with a surface above around 44°C can damage tissue over time without ever feeling alarming, and the animals most at risk are the ones who want the heat most: old, stiff, recovering, or simply too comfortable to move. That's the reasoning behind the temperature ceiling here and behind every warning on this page.

The escape route is the real safety feature

Any heated bed should cover part of the sleeping area and no more. Pets thermoregulate by moving, and a bed that is warm from edge to edge removes the only control they have. Pad at one end, cool at the other, every time.

Cords are the other risk

A chewed mains cable is a serious injury or worse. The 50cm steel sleeve covers the stretch nearest the pad, which is where a dog starts, and the UL-listed adapter means the electronics have been independently tested. Route the remaining cable out of reach anyway, and unplug it when you're out until you know how your pet treats it.

Care & maintenance

Unplug it and let it cool before you do anything. Wipe the waterproof surface with a damp cloth — never put it in a washing machine, never submerge it, and never fold or crease it, which damages the heating wire inside. Store it rolled rather than folded. Check the cord for damage every few weeks, especially the section nearest the pad.

Questions

Before you order

Can it burn my pet?

It runs at 35 to 45°C, which is about body temperature - far cooler than a human heating pad. The real risk with any heated bed is prolonged contact on an animal who can't move away, so always leave part of the bed unheated and use the low setting for an elderly or immobile pet.

Is it safe to leave on overnight?

Many owners do, on the low setting, with the pad covering only part of the bed. For the first few nights stay nearby and check how warm your pet feels when you get up. If they're a chewer, unplug it when you're not in the room.

What if my dog chews the cord?

The 50cm nearest the pad is sleeved in steel, which is the section dogs reach for. The rest isn't, so route it behind furniture and unplug it when you're out until you know how he treats it.

Can I use it in a shed, garage or outdoor kennel?

No. It's rated for indoor use only, and damp plus mains electricity is not a combination to experiment with.

Which size do I need?

M at 45x45cm suits a cat or a small dog curled up. L at 70x45cm lets a spaniel or a medium dog stretch out. Both are 1.5cm thick and designed to go inside the bed they already use.

Can I wash it?

No. Unplug it, let it cool, and wipe the waterproof surface with a damp cloth. Never machine wash it, submerge it, or fold it - folding damages the heating wire inside. Store it rolled.

Will it work outside the US?

No. It's AC 110V, so it's for North American supply only.
