WHY DEPTH IS THE WHOLE PROBLEM
Inside every claw is the quick — a blood vessel and a nerve running most of the way down. Cut into it and it bleeds and it hurts, and your cat remembers. On an open clipper, nothing stops you but your own judgement, and judgement is exactly what a first-timer hasn't got yet.
WHAT THE APERTURE ACTUALLY DOES
The hole is sized so only 2mm of claw can pass through before it seats. Close the handles and 2mm comes off — no more, regardless of pressure. On a claw trimmed at normal intervals, that's the clear hook and nothing else.
WHAT IT DOESN'T DO
It isn't a guarantee. If claws haven't been touched in months the quick grows out with them, and 2mm can still reach it on a badly overgrown claw. Take one small pass, check the cut end, and stop if you see a dark or moist-looking centre. Trimming regularly makes the quick recede, which buys you room over time.

Questions Before You Order?
Here are answers to some of the most common questions about this product.

It's much harder, but it isn't impossible. The aperture caps each cut at 2mm, which on a normally maintained claw is just the clear tip. If your cat's claws are badly overgrown, the quick has grown out with them and 2mm can still reach it. Take one pass, look at the cut end, and stop if the centre looks dark or moist.

Press a clean cloth to the tip for a minute or two. Styptic powder from any pet shop stops it fastest; cornstarch or plain flour pressed into the tip works if you haven't any. Worth having some in before your first attempt. If it hasn't stopped after ten minutes, call your vet.

For a cat, yes — 2mm is roughly the clear hook you're meant to be taking anyway. For a small dog with thicker claws you'll want two or three passes per nail, which is slower but no less effective.

That one has an open aperture, so you choose how much comes off. Faster once you're confident, and better for catching up on overgrown claws. This one limits every cut to 2mm, which is what you want while you're still learning.

Every two to four weeks, front paws only. Back claws wear down on their own. Older cats often need doing more often because they stop using their scratching post as much.

Don't start with the clippers. For a week, just hold a paw for two seconds and give a treat. Then press a pad to extend a claw and give a treat. Once that's boring to her, add the clippers and do one claw. If she genuinely panics rather than just objects, don't push it — your vet or a groomer can do it in a couple of minutes.

Puppies and small breeds, yes. Anything larger than a spaniel has claws too thick for a 2mm aperture. We'd steer you away from birds and reptiles — their claws bleed heavily and that's a job for a vet.
